The Chord Pathfinder
A Journey Through Harmonic Relationships
Welcome to The Chord Pathfinder, a revolutionary approach to understanding harmonic relationships through Gottfried Weber's classic Table of Tonal Relations.
Join our expert team of musicians and theorists from the University of Liverpool as they guide you through the fascinating world of chord progressions,
from Beatles classics to Chopin nocturnes, from jazz fusion to romantic harmony. Whether you're a beginner seeking to understand why certain chords work together,
or an advanced musician exploring complex harmonic substitutions, this series offers fresh insights into the music you love.
The project is led by Professor Kenneth Smith, alongside Dr Jenn Kirby, Dr Paul Turowski, Dr Jonathan Crossley, and Dr Richard Worth. Together, the team combines expertise in music theory, composition, performance, digital technologies, music education, and creative practice to develop innovative ways of exploring harmony through video resources, software, games, workshops, and interactive hardware.
We are also offering teaching and workshop sessions for colleges, sixth forms, music hubs, and other educational organisations working with learners aged 16+. To discuss arranging a session for your students, please contact the Project Lead, Professor Kenneth Smith, at kenneth.smith@liverpool.ac.uk.
